Customer Story: Amidst damage, Our Savior Lutheran Church finds a way to pay it forward.
You have been following the destruction caused by multiple tornadoes that ripped through Illinois, Indiana, Michigan,Missouri and Wisconsin on Sunday, November 17. In the wake of the tragedy our thoughts are with those who lost loved ones and who now begin the marathon of rebuilding their homes and businesses.
Hundreds of Westfield customers were impacted by this event. Some have seen their property totally destroyed. One is Our Savior Lutheran Church, and despite the major damage to its property, the church's members are leaders of recovery efforts in hard hit Washington, Illinois.
The church sits at the edge of the tornado's path in Washington. Though its property experienced damages estimated to be greater than $1million, the church members immediately established a staging area for the neighborhood on the church grounds, The church, running off generators, invites people to use its facilities. Members also are assisting with the cleanup and delivering food to residents and workers in the neighborhood.
Westfield Responds Based On Emloyee's Recommendations
Next week, Westfield and local agency partner Alexander-Murray Agency will deliver a $10,000 donation to Lutheran Church Charities' Disaster Response Fund. LCC is well-known for its disaster relief efforts and is positioned to designate resources and supplies to the relief and recovery efforts. The donation was directed based on the advice of Jason Metsker, property catastrophe claims manager, Gabe Yensho, regional property specialist, and others on the storm team duty.
In addition, Westfield is supporting the American Red Cross in its preparations for the next disaster. When people share Westfield's 2013 electronic holiday card, we will make a donation to the American Red Cross. Shares by 10,000 or more people will generate a donation of $10,000. The Holiday Card will be available for distribution shortly.
How You Can Help
We encourage our employees and agents to spread the word about Trusted Choice Disaster Relief Fund. Westfield has supported the Trusted Choice Disaster Relief Fund many times over the years. The fund was established by the Big "I" to assist those in the insurance industry who have suffered losses due to natural or man-made disasters.
The fund makes cash grants to pay for immediate or ongoing financial needs when funding sources such as insurance and other grants are not available. Click here for details.
As shared in the past, please remember that the situation after a disaster is choaotic, with a rush of international, national and local organizations as well as individuals trying to help. Oranizers of disaster relief efforts strongly discourage in-kind donations because handling can impede efforts to respond efficiently to the most basic needs.
