The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) is increasing their emphasis on construction site safety. OSHA is increasing their construction site inspections by using the following programs.
- Adding 110 new compliance officers in 2010.
- Launching a pilot program to partner with local building inspectors.
The pilot program will initially partner with building inspectors from 11 cities across the Continental US. The purpose of this partnership is to assist OSHA to identify construction site safety violations in order to reduce workers injuries and fatalities. OSHA will provide these building inspectors the necessary training to identify the four leading causes of construction sites injuries and fatalities.
- Falls
- Electrocution
- Being crushed or caught between objects
- Being struck by moving machinery or objects
Under the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970, it is the responsibility of the employer to provide a safe and healthful workplace for their employees. OSHA is setting and enforcing the minimum safety standards to provide all employees with a safe and healthful working environment. OSHA will also provide training, education and assistance in order to comply with these minimum safety standards.
